Having grown up with a developmentally disabled sister (who rarely saw herself on screen and who had trouble making friends), I believe passionately in the power and importance of disability representation, especially in children's television.

That's why I created Disney's first princess with a disability on SOFIA THE FIRST.

And it's why I'm so proud to report that today - for World Autism Awareness Day - Disney is premiering th...

Ooh la la! Today, FANCY NANCY was nominated for the 2020 NAMIC Vision Award for Animation!

Founded in 1994, the 2020 NAMIC Vision Awards will again salute and recognize original content shown on television and/or digital platforms that is reflective of the depth and breadth of the lives, spirit and contributions of people of color.

I'm proud to be a writer on this magnifique show!

This Sunday, March 8th at 12pm, LA's Theatre of NOTE will stage a reading of my comedy THRILLSVILLE.

Over two weeks, Theatre of NOTE is holding its Ink and Drink reading festival to hear the plays on the theatre's short list for their next season. All the plays in this series have been read and voted on by company members and have already received an "in-house" reading. These readings are a chance to hear the plays in front of...

Tonight, FANCY NANCY was nominated for a Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Writing in a Preschool Animated Series. We didn't take home the trophy, but it truly is an honor to be nominated.

Pictured here is our very fancy writing staff on the red carpet - Laurie Israel, head writer Krista Tucker and moi! (In absentia: Andrew Guerdat).

Tonight, my Sofia the First episode "The Lost Pyramid" (about Disney's first princess with a disability - the adventurous Princess Cassandra, who happens to be blind) was honored with a Sentinel Award (given out by the Norman Lear Center) - in the company of shows like Speechless, GLOW, Chicago Med, Madam Secretary, Grey's Anatomy, Sesame Street, 13 Reasons Why, One Day at a Time and Empire.

This award is given out annually to...

My SOFIA THE FIRST episode THE LOST PYRAMID premieres tomorrow (Wed, May 16th, 2018) at 11:30am on the Disney Channel. I'm particularly proud of this one, as it features the debut of Disney's first-ever princess with a disability... Princess Cassandra!

Cassandra is an Indiana Jones-like "archeomagicalogist" (Yeah, I made that up) - a person who studies ancient magic - who also happens to be blind. (It was her early experience r...

"One of the creative, caring people working in the world of animated TV shows for kids is the Emmy-winning Matt Hoverman, who has written for Arthur (on PBS) and now for Sofia the First (on Disney) — and began as a playwright. I recently asked him about his niche — how his writing fills a vital need in children’s lives."

Thanks to Robin Rothstein of the Clyde Fitch Report for this lovely interview about my playwriting and TV w...

The press has been great for the Cotuit Center for the Arts' production of CHRISTMAS SHORTS. (It runs through December 22nd, but is now completely sold out, from what I understand).

CHRISTMAS SHORTS jingles with laughs. Hilarious… the show is an excellent multi-part farce. The jokes, while ridiculous, are not merely frivolous, and the social commentary can be biting.

Last night, I was the guest speaker at the Humanitas Prize Judges Dinner.

Here's a video link to my speech (about 11 minutes long), in which I speak about nuns, cartoons and saving the world.

The Humanitas Prize is an award for film and television writing intended to promote human dignity, meaning, and freedom. It began in 1974 with Father Ellwood "Bud" Kieser—also the founder of Paulist Productions—but is generally not seen as...

I'm very proud of the Martha's Vineyard Playhouse production of my comedy WHO YOU SEE HERE (running Aug. 4th - Sept. 2nd). The cast is great and the audiences are loving it.

Here are some nice reviews:

"“Who You See Here” by Emmy-winning writer Matt Hoverman is a smart, witty, and very funny play that draws its humor from human foibles, modern life, and celebrity gossip culture. A series of coincidences along the way and a...
